How to Calculate Your GPA (Semester and Cumulative)

Your GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a simple one — which is why averaging your semester GPAs gives the wrong answer. Here's the actual formula, worked examples, and how to project the GPA you need next term.

What a GPA Actually Measures

Your grade point average converts letter grades into numbers and averages them — but not evenly. Each course is weighted by how many credit hours it carries, so a 4-credit chemistry course influences your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit seminar. This is the single most misunderstood part of GPA math, and it is the reason two students with identical letter grades can end up with different GPAs.

The mechanism is quality points. Every course earns quality points equal to its credit hours multiplied by the grade points for the letter grade received. Your GPA is the total quality points divided by the total credit hours. Everything else in this guide follows from that one formula.

The 4.0 Scale

Most US institutions use an unweighted 4.0 scale. Plus and minus grades shift the value by roughly 0.3, though some schools do not use them at all and a few cap A+ at 4.0 rather than awarding 4.3. Always check your registrar's published scale — the differences are small per course but compound across a degree.

Calculating a Single Semester

Semester GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Take a student with four courses in one term. Multiply each course's credits by its grade points, sum the results, then divide by total credits.

Why the Weighting Matters

In the table above, 44.6 ÷ 13 = 3.43. Now notice what a simple average of the grade points would have given you: (3.3 + 3.7 + 4.0 + 2.3) ÷ 4 = 3.33. The credit-weighted figure is a tenth of a point higher because the weakest grade landed in the smallest course.

That gap is the whole reason GPA is calculated this way. It also has a practical implication worth internalising early: a poor grade in a heavy course does far more damage than the same grade in a light one, and a strong grade in a 1-credit lab does less to rescue you than you might hope.

Calculating Cumulative GPA

Cumulative GPA extends the same formula across every term you have completed. Sum the quality points from all terms, sum all credit hours, and divide. What you must not do is average your semester GPAs together — that treats a 6-credit summer session as equal to a 16-credit autumn term, and it produces a number that does not match your transcript.

Here is the difference in practice. A student earns a 3.20 across 15 credits, then a 4.00 across 6 summer credits. Averaging the two semester GPAs suggests 3.60. The correct calculation is ((15 × 3.20) + (6 × 4.00)) ÷ 21 = (48 + 24) ÷ 21 = 72 ÷ 21 = 3.43. The averaged figure overstates the result by nearly two tenths.

Projecting the GPA You Need Next Term

Working backwards is often more useful than working forwards, particularly if you are trying to reach a threshold for a scholarship, a major, or an honours designation. Rearranging the formula gives you the GPA required next term:

Needed GPA = (Target × (Current Credits + Next Credits) − Current Quality Points) ÷ Next Credits

A student sitting at 3.08 across 39 credits who wants a 3.50 cumulative, taking 15 credits next term, needs (3.50 × 54 − 120) ÷ 15 = 4.60. That is impossible on a 4.0 scale, and knowing it now is genuinely useful — it redirects the effort toward a two-term plan, a heavier credit load, or a grade-replacement option instead of a target that cannot be hit.

What Usually Does Not Count

  • Pass/fail courses: Typically award credit toward your degree but carry no grade points, so they sit outside the GPA entirely.
  • Transfer credits: Most institutions accept the credit but not the grade, meaning transferred coursework satisfies requirements without moving your GPA.
  • Withdrawals: A W generally appears on the transcript without grade points and is excluded from the calculation.
  • Incompletes: Usually excluded until the grade is finalised, at which point they fold in normally.
  • Repeated courses: Policy varies significantly. Some schools replace the original grade, others average both attempts, and a few count only the most recent. This is worth confirming with your registrar before relying on it.

Weighted GPA in High School

High schools frequently use a weighted scale that adds 0.5 for honours courses and 1.0 for AP or IB courses, producing GPAs above 4.0. A student with straight As in all AP courses might report a 5.0 weighted GPA alongside a 4.0 unweighted one.

College applications almost always ask for both, and admissions offices routinely recalculate GPAs using their own scale to compare applicants fairly across schools. Report the figures your school produces rather than trying to pre-adjust them — the recalculation is theirs to do.

What Counts as a Good GPA

Context matters more than the raw number. A 3.0 is the common floor for graduate programmes and many scholarships. A 3.5 typically clears cum laude thresholds and most competitive internships. Above 3.7 is strong nearly everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my calculated GPA match my transcript? The usual causes are including pass/fail or transfer credits that your school excludes, using the wrong grade-point values for plus and minus grades, or forgetting that a repeated course may have replaced rather than supplemented the original grade.

Can I raise a low GPA? Early on, yes, substantially — each new term is a large share of your total credits. Later it becomes much harder, because accumulated credits act as ballast. A student with 30 credits can move their GPA several tenths in one term; a student with 100 credits usually cannot.

Does a 1-credit course really matter? Only slightly. A 1-credit course contributes one credit's worth of weight, so an A in a 1-credit lab moves a 15-credit term by a few hundredths. It is not nothing, but it will not rescue a term.
