Dividend yield is one of the most widely referenced metrics for income investors and retirees who rely on investment income rather than capital appreciation. It expresses the annual cash return per share as a percentage of the current share price, making it directly comparable to bond yields, savings account rates, and other income-generating instruments. A utility stock yielding 4% and a high-growth tech stock yielding 0.5% serve very different investor goals. Income investors screening for reliable passive income, portfolio managers balancing yield against growth, and analysts assessing dividend sustainability all use this calculation. Enter the annual dividend per share and the current price to see the yield instantly.
How It Works
Dividend Yield (%) = (Annual Dividend per Share รท Current Stock Price) ร 100. The annual dividend is the total amount paid per share over the trailing 12 months (or the next 12 months for forward yield). Dividing by the price converts it to a fraction of the stock's cost, and multiplying by 100 expresses it as a percentage. For example, a $2 annual dividend on a $50 stock: ($2 รท $50) ร 100 = 4%. Note that yield changes whenever the price changes โ a falling stock price mechanically increases the yield even if the dividend is unchanged, which is why unusually high yields deserve closer scrutiny.
