Grams and kilograms are the two most practical metric mass units โ grams for small portions, kilograms for larger quantities. Food packaging, supplement labels, and kitchen recipes use grams, while shipping rates, luggage allowances, and body weight use kilograms. Scientists and engineers frequently need to move between the two when aggregating measurements, calculating density, or comparing results across different instruments. One kilogram is defined as exactly 1,000 grams by SI convention, making this a simple division with no approximation error. This calculator divides any gram value by 1,000 and returns kilograms to six decimal places, supporting precise values from sub-gram measurements up to multi-tonne weights.
How It Works
Kilograms = Grams รท 1,000. The prefix 'kilo-' in SI units means one thousand, so one kilogram is by definition exactly 1,000 grams. Dividing by 1,000 shifts the decimal point three places to the left โ 750 g becomes 0.75 kg, 2,500 g becomes 2.5 kg, and 50 g becomes 0.05 kg. Because the conversion factor is an exact integer power of 10, no rounding occurs during the calculation. The six decimal place display ensures that small gram values like 5 g (0.005 kg) or 1 g (0.001 kg) are shown correctly rather than appearing as zero.
