Inches and feet are the two most common units for short-to-medium lengths in the United States, and many measurement tools output in inches — tape measures, digital calipers, laser measures, and rulers all read in inches or fractions of an inch. Architects, builders, and designers frequently need to express those inch measurements in feet for drawings, estimates, and specifications. Hardware stores list lumber in feet, flooring in square feet, and ceiling heights in feet. This calculator divides any inch value by 12 — the exact definition of one foot — and returns the decimal foot equivalent. For example, 78 inches becomes 6.5 feet, which is more useful for comparing to a ceiling height specification than a raw 78-inch figure. Results are shown to six decimal places to handle irregular measurements.
How It Works
Feet = Inches ÷ 12. One foot is defined as exactly 12 inches by US customary and international definition. Dividing any inch value by 12 produces the decimal foot equivalent. Whole-number multiples of 12 — like 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 — return clean integer feet. Non-multiples produce repeating decimals: 1 inch = 0.08333... feet (1/12 repeating). The calculator displays six decimal places to provide sufficient precision for construction and engineering applications where fractions of a foot matter. To convert decimal feet back to feet-and-inches, take the integer part as feet and multiply the fractional part by 12 to get inches.
