Kelvin is the SI base unit for thermodynamic temperature and appears throughout physics, chemistry, astronomy, and engineering. Yet most people understand temperature only in Celsius or Fahrenheit, making Kelvin values difficult to interpret at a glance. Converting Kelvin to Celsius provides an immediate sense of scale — whether a temperature is below freezing, room temperature, or hot enough to melt metal. The conversion is simple because Kelvin and Celsius share the same degree size; only their zero points differ. Zero Kelvin (absolute zero) equals −273.15 °C. How It Works
The Kelvin and Celsius scales use identical degree increments — a change of 1 K is exactly equal to a change of 1 °C. The only difference between them is where they place zero. Celsius defines 0 °C as the freezing point of water at standard pressure, while Kelvin places 0 K at absolute zero, the theoretical minimum temperature where all molecular motion ceases. That offset is 273.15 degrees. To convert any Kelvin value to Celsius, subtract 273.15: °C = K − 273.15. For example, 300 K − 273.15 = 26.85 °C. Room temperature (~293–298 K), body temperature (310 K), and the boiling point of water (373.15 K) all become intuitive Celsius values through this single subtraction. The result is displayed to four decimal places to preserve the precision of scientific inputs, though most everyday applications only require one or two decimal places.
