Use this Percentage Change Calculator to find how much a value has changed in percentage terms between an original and a new value. Whether you are tracking revenue growth, price fluctuations, investment returns, or population changes, this calculator shows the percent change (positive for increases, negative for decreases), the labeled direction of change, and the raw absolute difference โ giving you both the relative and absolute magnitude of the shift in a single calculation. This is the standard formula used in financial reporting, scientific research, and business analytics to express how much any measured quantity has moved from one point in time or condition to another. Expressing change as a percentage rather than a raw number makes comparisons meaningful across different scales, enabling you to quickly evaluate whether a $5 price increase on a $20 product represents a more significant shift than a $50 increase on a $1,000 item, and to communicate those differences clearly in reports, presentations, and everyday decisions.
How It Works
Percent change is calculated using the formula (new โ original) รท original ร 100. First, the difference between the new and original values is found by subtracting the original from the new. That difference is then divided by the original value to express the change as a proportion, and multiplying by 100 converts it to a percentage. A positive result indicates growth or an increase, while a negative result indicates a decline. The calculator also labels the direction explicitly as an Increase, Decrease, or No Change, and displays both the signed difference and the absolute difference so you can see the full scale of the change without needing to do additional arithmetic.
