Avoid surprises at the checkout counter. The Sales Tax Calculator lets you enter a pre-tax price and a local sales tax rate to instantly find the exact tax amount owed and the final price you will pay out of pocket. Whether you are budgeting for a large purchase, double-checking a receipt, comparing prices across states with different rates, or calculating the tax on a business expense for reimbursement, this calculator gives you the precise tax amount and total in seconds. It also works in reverse context: if you know the total and want to back out the original price, divide the total by one plus the tax rate decimal. Enter any price and any rate โ including combined state-plus-local rates โ for an accurate result. US sales tax rates vary widely from 0% in states like Oregon and Montana to over 10% when state and local levies are combined, so always use the correct combined rate for your specific city to get an accurate estimate of what you will owe at the register.
How It Works
The sales tax rate percentage is converted to a decimal by dividing by 100. That decimal is then multiplied by the pre-tax price to calculate the exact tax amount: Tax = Price ร (Rate รท 100). The total final price is the pre-tax price plus the tax amount: Total = Price + Tax. For example, a $100 item at 7.25% sales tax produces a $7.25 tax charge and a $107.25 total. All three values โ original price, tax amount, and final total โ are displayed so you can see exactly how the final price is composed. Sales tax rates vary widely: US state rates range from 0% (in states like Oregon and Delaware) to over 10% when state and local rates are combined. Always use the combined rate for your specific city or county for an accurate total.
