Steps to Kilometers Calculator
Convert steps to kilometers (and miles) based on your height, and estimate calories burned.
Enter your values and click Calculate
This steps to kilometers calculator converts your step count to distance using a stride length formula derived from your height. Stride length — the distance covered by two steps — correlates closely with height: research shows that stride length is approximately 41.4% of height for walking. Taller people take longer strides and cover more ground per step, so the same 10,000 steps covers different distances for different people. Enter your step count and height to get your distance in kilometers and miles, plus an estimated calorie burn based on body weight. The 10,000-steps-per-day goal — popularized by Japanese marketing in the 1960s and later adopted by fitness trackers — is a reasonable activity target for most adults, corresponding to approximately 6–8 km (4–5 miles) depending on height. Research supports that 7,000–9,000 steps per day is associated with significantly reduced all-cause mortality risk.
How It Works
Stride length is estimated using the formula: stride length (inches) = height (inches) × 0.414. This factor comes from biomechanics research showing that walking stride length is approximately 41.4% of height for most adults. Distance is calculated as: distance (inches) = steps × stride length, then converted — 1 inch = 0.0000254 km, 1 inch = 1/63,360 miles. Calorie estimation uses the MET formula: calories = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours). Walking at a normal pace has a MET of approximately 3.5. Time is estimated assuming an average walking pace of 100 steps per minute. Calorie results are estimates — actual burn varies with terrain, pace, and individual fitness.
