Calculating the right tip and splitting a check fairly are tasks most people encounter several times a week. This tip calculator handles everything at once: the tip amount, the total bill including gratuity, the amount each person owes, and the individual tip contribution per person. It works for restaurants, food delivery, hairdressers, taxi and rideshare fares, hotel staff, massage therapists, and any other service setting where gratuity is expected. Tipping norms in the United States have shifted significantly over the past decade. What was once a 15% standard at sit-down restaurants is now closer to 18–20%, with many digital payment systems defaulting to 20–25% prompts. Counter service, takeout, and delivery have also moved toward tip prompts that did not exist a generation ago, leaving many people unsure of the appropriate amount for each situation. This calculator removes the guesswork by letting you review the full financial picture clearly before deciding. For groups, splitting the check evenly is the most friction-free approach, but it requires knowing the total including tip before dividing — something most people cannot compute reliably in their head. Business travelers and anyone expensing meals find the itemized breakdown especially useful: having the base bill, tip amount, and total clearly separated simplifies reimbursement forms and budget tracking. The calculator also makes it easy to see the per-person cost difference between tip percentages — often just a dollar or two — which can make it easier to tip generously.
How It Works
The tip calculator applies three sequential formulas to produce all four outputs. First, the tip amount is calculated by multiplying the bill total by the tip percentage expressed as a decimal: Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100). For a $65 bill at 20%, this gives $65 × 0.20 = $13.00. Second, the total bill including gratuity is found by adding the tip to the original: Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount, giving $65 + $13 = $78.00. Third, the per-person share is derived by dividing the total by the number of people: Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People. For a party of two, $78 ÷ 2 = $39.00 per person. The tip per person is broken out separately using: Tip Per Person = Tip Amount ÷ Number of People. This detail is useful when the table splits payment across multiple cards — the server may need to know the exact tip per card. The select field offers six preset tip percentages aligned to common US service norms, from 10% for below-average service to 30% for truly exceptional experiences. The people field supports up to 100 diners, making this equally useful for intimate dinners and large event groups. All four output figures update instantly when any input changes.
