Calculating the actual profit or loss on a cryptocurrency position requires knowing more than just the price change — you need to account for how many coins you received for your investment and what fees reduced your net gain. This calculator takes your total investment in dollars, your buy price, and the current price to compute the number of coins acquired, current portfolio value, net profit after fees, and ROI percentage. Bitcoin investors commonly use it to evaluate a position they entered during a dip: buying $2,000 of BTC at $40,000 means you hold 0.05 BTC, and if the price reaches $80,000, your position is worth $4,000 for a $2,000 profit. Ethereum traders use it to assess mid-cycle gains before deciding whether to take profits or hold. Altcoin traders use it as a quick reality check — determining whether a 40% price increase still results in a net loss once fees are factored in. The trading fee field captures exchange commissions (Binance charges 0.1%, Coinbase up to 1.5%), which compound meaningfully on large trades or when fees were paid on both the buy and sell sides. Setting fee to 0 shows gross profit; entering the combined round-trip fee gives a conservative after-fee figure.

How It Works

Coins Held = Investment ÷ Buy Price. Current Value = Coins Held × Current Price. Fee Amount = Investment × (Fee % ÷ 100). Net Profit = Current Value − Investment − Fee Amount. ROI = (Net Profit ÷ Investment) × 100. As a worked example: $1,000 invested at a buy price of $30,000 gives Coins = $1,000 ÷ $30,000 = 0.033333 BTC. At a current price of $65,000, Current Value = 0.033333 × $65,000 = $2,166.67. Fee Amount = $1,000 × 0.005 = $5.00. Net Profit = $2,166.67 − $1,000 − $5.00 = $1,161.67. ROI = ($1,161.67 ÷ $1,000) × 100 = 116.17%. The fee is applied to the initial investment only (the buy-side fee). If you also paid a sell-side fee, double the fee percentage to capture both sides of the round trip.

Examples

Bitcoin Bull Run
$1,000 in BTC at $30,000, now at $65,000, with 0.5% fee.
Result: Current value: $2,166.67 — Net profit: ~$1,162 — ROI: ~116%.
Altcoin Loss
$500 in an altcoin at $5, now at $2, with 1% fee.
Result: Current value: $200 — Net loss: ~-$305 — ROI: ~-61%.
ETH Mid-Cycle Check
$2,000 in ETH at $2,000, now at $3,500, with 0.1% fee.
Result: Current value: $3,500 — Net profit: ~$1,498 — ROI: ~74.9%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include taxes?
No — this calculator shows gross profit before capital gains tax. In the US, crypto profits are taxable as capital gains: short-term (held under 1 year) at ordinary income rates, and long-term (held over 1 year) at preferential rates of 0%, 15%, or 20%. Use the Crypto Tax Calculator to estimate your after-tax proceeds.
Can I use this for any coin?
Yes — enter the buy and current price for any cryptocurrency, token, or NFT floor price. The calculator works for any asset where profit is calculated as (current price ÷ buy price − 1) × investment. For NFTs, use the floor price as the current price for an approximate mark-to-market valuation.
What trading fee should I enter?
Enter your exchange's maker or taker fee as a percentage. Binance charges approximately 0.1%, Coinbase Pro 0.5%, Kraken 0.26%, and Coinbase (retail) up to 1.5%. If you paid fees on both entry and exit, double the percentage to capture the full round-trip cost. Gas fees on Ethereum or other blockchains can also be added by converting them to a percentage of your investment amount.
