New Year's Day is January 1st — the one holiday that the entire world recognizes, even if celebrated on different calendar systems. The calculator reads today's date with JavaScript's new Date() and extracts the current year. It then constructs the next New Year's target as new Date(year + 1, 0, 1) — always January 1 of the following year, using month index 0. The millisecond difference between that target and now is divided by 86,400,000 and rounded up with Math.ceil so that any partial remaining day counts as a full day. Unlike other holiday countdowns, this one never needs to check whether the target has passed, because January 1 of next year is always in the future.
