Days Until Thanksgiving

Unlike fixed-date holidays, US Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, which means the date shifts by one to six days every year between November 22nd and 28th. Knowing the exact date and day count matters for grocery orders, flight bookings (prices spike weeks before the holiday), vacation planning, and timing any commercial promotions tied to the Thanksgiving shopping weekend. This calculator dynamically computes the correct fourth Thursday for the current year and counts down to it from today. Once that date has passed, it automatically calculates next year's date so the countdown stays relevant year-round.

The getThanksgiving function creates a Date object for November 1st of the given year (month index 10 in JavaScript). It reads that day's day-of-week (0 = Sunday through 6 = Saturday). The offset to the first Thursday is (4 − dayOfWeek + 7) % 7, ensuring a non-negative result. Adding that offset plus 21 days (three full weeks) to November 1st lands on the fourth Thursday. If today has already passed that date, the function is called again for the following year. The millisecond difference is divided by 86,400,000 and rounded up with Math.ceil.
