Figuring out the tip and splitting the check should not slow down a good meal or cause an awkward pause at the table. This calculator takes your total bill amount, your chosen tip percentage, and the number of diners to instantly calculate the exact tip amount, the new total including tip, and each person's equal share. It works for any party size from one to many and any tip percentage — standard, generous, or minimal — making it ideal for restaurants, cafes, food delivery, and any service where a gratuity applies. Standard tip percentages in the US range from 15% for adequate service to 20–25% for excellent service. Large parties should check whether the restaurant has already added an automatic gratuity, which is common for groups of 6 or more, to avoid double-tipping. Food delivery services often suggest a default tip percentage during checkout, but using this calculator lets you quickly verify that the suggested tip is reasonable relative to the order size and adjust it to match the level of service you want to reward.

How It Works

The tip amount is calculated by converting your tip percentage to a decimal and multiplying it by the total bill: tip = bill × (tipPercent ÷ 100). The total including tip equals the original bill plus the tip amount. The per-person share equals the total (bill + tip) divided by the number of diners. For example, a $100 bill with a 20% tip gives a $20 tip, $120 total, and $30 per person for 4 people. For a 15% tip on $85.50, the tip is $12.83, the total is $98.33, and each of 3 people owes $32.78. The split assumes equal shares; if diners want to pay based on what they individually ordered, use the total per-person output as a starting reference and adjust manually.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard tip percentage?
In the United States, 15% to 20% is considered standard for sit-down restaurant service, depending on the quality of service.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette experts generally agree you should tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the final post-tax total for convenience.
What if the bill includes an automatic gratuity?
If an automatic gratuity or service charge is already included in your bill (common for large parties), you do not need to add an additional tip unless you want to reward exceptional service.
How does the split work?
The calculator splits the bill totally evenly. It does not itemize the check based on who ordered what.
